Indigenous Students Punished for not Standing for Pledge of Allegiance
A pair of students in North California who chose not to salute the U.S. flag and cite the pledge of allegiance during class were punished by their teacher, who lowered the students’ grades because of their decision not to honor people who committed genocide against the indigenous peoples of this continent. When one of the students explained to the teacher her reasoning for not standing, she was told dismissively, “Your ancestors are dead.”
