It’s been over half-a-century since most African countries severed the chains of European colonialism and officially gained their independence, and during the intermediate years between then and now the academic community has largely come to the point of acknowledging, albeit kicking and screaming, that humanity and much of civilization as we know it have their roots in Africa. But while science firmly places humanity’s origins inside the continent, Hollywood has apparently changed very little since the world supposedly did away with its colonial racist past. Two major studio films will be released this year – The Gods of Egypt,(directed by Alex Proyas) and Exodus: Gods and Kings (directed by Ridley Scott) – which will attempt to portray historically-based events that occurred in Ancient Africa, but with all-white actors being cast in the lead roles. Adding insult to injury is the fact the only roles in which people of color have been cast, at least in the latter film, are those of guards, assassins, “lower class civilians”, thieves, and oh yea… servants. Never mind the reality that during the historical period in which these movies are supposed to have taken place, virtually no white person had yet even stepped foot anywhere in Africa, particularly not in Egypt.
While it is tempting to give the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt and assume that it was never their intention to be so racially-biased in favor of white actors, the images accompanying the soon-to-be-released motion picture films quickly dispel any notion of that being the case. (*) There is no better example than that of the Exodus movie’s recreated monuments of the 19th dynasty Pharaoh Ramesses II, the actual ones being over 2,700 years old and located at Abu-Simbel right next to Egypt’s border with Sudan. The face of the Exodus movie statue bears not even the slightest resemblance to the actual monument on which it was based.

Either the creators of this film have never laid eyes on a photograph of the monuments in question, something that could have been rendered with a quick Google search, or they deliberately sought to “de-Africanize” the Pharaoh’s features by giving him an appearance they thought looked more like a “caucasian”. Particularly irritating is the man who’s been cast in the role of the great King of Egypt himself, a white Australian-born actor by the name of Joel Edgerton. Granted I’ve never heard of the man before this. He may be an excellent actor as far as I know. That doesn’t change the fact that he looks incredibly ridiculous trying to pull off the role of Ramesses II. Judging by the three images I’ve collected below, it appears as if the producers believe that the problem of having a white-as-a-ghost actor in the role of an Egyptian king can be rendered by simply borrowing a can of John Boehner’s orange-tinted sunless spray tan. I guess this is supposed to give him an “exotic” look:
While some might argue that it doesn’t really matter much since the story of “Exodus” is in itself mostly mythology anyway, that doesn’t change the fact that Hollywood is intentionally perpetuating the myth that civilization was somehow conceived of by white men. The Gods of Egypt meanwhile falls nothing short of hilarious in its bogus attempt at recreating the Black Gods of early Africa whose origins are firmly rooted in the Great Lakes region of inner-equatorial Africa. A British and a Dutch actor, both of them white, will be facing off in the roles of the Nile Valley Gods Horus and Set. Here’s a look at how that’s turning out:

Many of the articles that have appeared online criticizing the casting of all-white actors seem to be of the opinion that what they call “Middle Eastern” actors should have been cast in their stead, but in truth Arabs aren’t exactly indigenous to the Nile River Valley either. The origins of Ancient Egyptian Civilization lie at the source of the Nile River. Aside from the Supreme Being, most of the Gods of the Ancient Nile Valley were actually people who lived before 5000 B.C. and, upon their deaths, were deified and thereafter worshiped. The earliest inhabitants of the land we now call Egypt came from the south near the great lakes region, and it is to them that modern civilization as we know is to be attributed. Traveling north from the land known to the ancient world as Ethiopia, civilizations sprung up all along the Nile Valley such as Axum, Ta-Seti, and Kerma. According to the oral tradition recorded by the Greek historian Diodorus Siculus in the 1st century B.C. during his sojourn in Africa, Egypt began in earliest antiquity as a colony or extension of Ethiopia itself. As one noted French Egyptologist wrote in the late 19th century, “By the almost unanimous testimony of the ancient historians, they (the Egyptians) belong to an African race which first settled in Ethiopia on the Middle Nile: following the course of the river they gradually reached the sea.” [Maspero, Gaston. The Dawn of Civilization. (1894).] Also contributing to the populating of northeastern Africa were the various Africans who migrated over an extended period of time towards the Nile River as the once-green pastures of the Sahara gradually dried up and became a barren desert.
It wasn’t until circa 3100-3500 B.C. when a King called Aha Min (referred to as ‘Menes’ by Greeks and subsequent historians) emerged from the south to conquer the Nile Valley kingdoms all the way up to the Mediterranean Sea. This is the first time in recorded history that the two lands known as Upper Egypt (located in the south) and Lower Egypt (located in the north) were unified to form a single entity. We should note, however, that “Egypt” is a word of Greek origin and the ancient inhabitants of the land never used it to refer to either themselves or their country. The proper word was Kmt (Kemet), the plural form of the word Km (Kem) meaning black. It was a descriptive word which was used in this case in reference to themselves, not the soil of the land as Eurocentric Egyptologists would have you believe. When describing themselves as if to distinguish themselves from foreigners, the term used was kmtjw. As the late great historian, Egyptologist, anthropologist, linguist, and physicist Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop demonstrated at the UNESCO 1974 Symposium that was held in Cairo, Egypt, there is no reference to land in either of these terms. The correct “hieroglyphic” (or ‘medu-netcher‘ as it was originally called) that one would use to refer to the black earth, black land or soil would be kme or some variation of it. Another term used by the ancients to describe their nation, Rmt kmt, does contain a reference to land. However, the ‘km’ is still a reference to the color of the people, translating to “men of the country of the black men”. [For the most thorough accounting of this and other evidence proving the African origin of the people of Ancient Kemet, please read the excellent paper written by Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop titled “Origins of the Ancient Egyptians” featured as part of Volume II in UNESCO‘s extraordinarily comprehensive 8-volume General History of Africa series.] It is of no insignificance that the United Nations’ Cairo Symposium commenced with the participants being in general agreement that the architects and creators of early Egyptian civilization were in fact migrants from “the Great Lakes region in inner-equatorial Africa.”
It wasn’t just the ancient Egyptians who described themselves as black in color either. Ancient writers the world over described the Egyptians in terms that left no ambiguity as to what they looked like. The most respected of ancient Greek historians, the man European scholars lauded as “the Father of History”, Herodotus, himself described the appearance of the Ancient Egyptians he came face to face with during his 5th century (B.C.) travels, remarking “that they are black-skinned and kinky-haired.” (Those are his exact words as they appear in The Histories: Book II.) The famous scientist and philosopher known as Aristotle also provided a description of the Egyptians’ appearance a century later in a statement that, while xenophobic, is still rather telling. Attempting to explain what he believed to be a correlation between physical appearance and personality traits, Aristotle wrote, “Those who are too black are cowards; like for instance, the Egyptians and the Ethiopians.” And as late the 2nd century AD, after many successive invasions of the land, the Greek writer Lucian described an Egyptian character in his Navigations as “not merely black; he has thick lips and his legs are too thin”, while Strabo described both Ethiopians and Egyptians as “darker than Hindus”. [Van Sertima, Ivan. (1986). The Journal of African Civilizations. Great African Thinkers: Cheikh Anta Diop. Pages 42-46.] And finally there’s Ammianus Marcellinus who, during the time that Egypt was under Roman domination, traveled from Rome to Africa and recorded in his Book XXII how “the men of Egypt are mostly brown or black with a skinny and desiccated look.” All throughout antiquity the people inhabiting ancient Egypt were referred to by the Greeks as ‘melanchroes‘, literally meaning black, as opposed to ‘leucochroes‘ (white) or ‘phrenychroes‘ (brown or dark red).
This man from the Kereyu tribe in Ethiopia bears a striking physical similarity to the Ancient Egyptians as described by the Greek historians of antiquity.
Why then does the average Egyptian dwelling in the modern Arab Republic of Egypt look significantly different from the original inhabitants of the Nile Valley? The answer lies in the many successive invasions and occupations that began taking place during the latter half of the 1st millennium B.C. Prior to about 1700 B.C., there were virtually no white people anywhere in Kemet aside from maybe a few Asiatic servants who trickled into the Delta. The first foreigners to appear on record came in very small numbers at first and were a group of Semitic people known simply as the Hyksos, which translates to ‘rulers of foreign lands’. (It was long believed that hyksos meant ‘shepherd kings’, but this has proved inaccurate.) At first their presence was welcomed in the kingdom, but as chaos and unrest spread throughout Kemet at the close of the 14th dynasty, the Hyksos were able to take advantage of the situation by usurping the throne of Lower Kemet and establishing themselves as rulers of an area which extended from the Mediterranean in the north to just below the city of Memphis in the south. Depending on which historian one relies on, the Hyksos rule in Lower Kemet lasted either 200 or 500 years in what’s been designated the Second Intermediate Period in Egyptian history. Whatever the case, the majority of Egypt was still governed by the native Egyptian population. By the time the Hyksos were driven out entirely by the last rulers of the 17th dynasty circa 1500 B.C., all of the greatest monuments for which Egypt is best-known for – the largest of the pyramids and Heremakhet (best known as the ‘Sphinx of Giza’) were at least as old as 1,000 years already. Ancient Egypt really began its decline, at least as far as its native history is concerned, with a wave of successive invasions and conquests that would eventually change the racial makeup of the people of the land and even the culture. The Assyrians conquered for seven years beginning in 656 B.C. Then came the first of what would amount to three different conquests by the Persians in 525 B.C. (the final was in 629 A.D.), followed by the conquest of Alexander the “Great” of Macedonia (Greece) in 334 B.C. and the beginning of the 300-year rule of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. Greek occupation was brought to an end by the all-powerful Roman Empire in 30 B.C. Egypt was essentially reduced to a vassal of the vast Roman empire during its 700-year occupation, but with the rise of Islam as a serious competitor to Christianity as a world religion, a small army of Arabs was able to conquer Egypt in 639 A.D. A major influx of Arabs into Egypt occurred in the next four years and by 643 A.D. Egypt was a largely Arab country. Aside from a later influx of Turks during the medieval rule of the Mameluks, the population has since remained majority Arab. But, as Professor Molefi Kete Asante points out, “The presence of Arabs today in Egypt should not be read as an ancient presence just as White presence in Australia should not be read as an ancient presence. The same for America.”
Let us not forget that the science of modern Egyptology is itself rooted in the 19th century era in which scientific and academic racism flourished, when Europeans did everything in their power to colonize not just land and people, but the various fields of academia to promote their “scientific” theories of white racial superiority. It should come as no surprise then that the earliest European explorers found ways of attributing everything extraordinary they found in the continent as the creation of white people. They even designated the Black people inhabiting East Africa (perhaps because they saw in them a strong physical similarity to Ancient Egyptians as they were described in the Greek texts) as “Hamites” or “black-skinned caucasians”. This is the double-standard white Egyptologists and anthropologists subjected people of color to. When it came to the study of the most glorious civilizations of antiquity, the Black people who were at the root of it suddenly became “caucasian” or at the very least classified as “non-negroid”. But when it came to deciding the rights of the people who shared these same characteristics in countries under white colonial rule, these “black-skinned Caucasians” suddenly became “Negroes” again in the eyes of the law. The archaeologists who garnered the highest respect from the academic community were usually the ones whose conclusions were the most racist. German Egyptologist Richard Karl Lepsius declared confidently that even Ancient ‘Nubia’ – located in modern-day Sudan – was a civilization that “belonged to the Caucasian race”. The British Egyptologist Richard A. Reisner echoed Lepsius’s sentiment without a single bit of evidence to bolster his claim other than his own white supremacist ideology. “Nubia’s leaders, including Piye,” wrote Reisner, “were light-skinned Egypto-Libyans who ruled over the primitive Africans.” Reisner’s racism was so insistent that, despite all of his “respectability”, he reconciled the unanimous testimony of the ancient Greek writers who described the Egyptians and Ethiopians as Black by saying that they were only referring to “the inert mass of the black races of Africa” who he says were a subjugated caste that “had never developed either its trade or any industry worthy of mention.” A doctor by the name of Joseph Maes wrote in a 1924 article that ancient megaliths located in West Africa could “not have been executed by the black race” because the megaliths “require a considerable amount of effort… without any relationship to the natural functions of eating and copulating which alone interest the black man.” (Maes also described himself as an expert in “Black psychology”.) And finally there’s James Breasted, America’s foremost Egyptologist during his lifetime and the founder of the Oriental Institute in Chicago, who once famously wrote in 1926, “The evolution of civilization has been the achievement of this Great White Race.” The “negroid” and “mongoloid” races, he proclaimed, were “geographically so remote” that they “had no direct connection with the main stream of civilized development of which we of the west are a part.” (**) Breasted of course failed to realize that during the prehistoric era in which civilization began to emerge in Africa followed by Asia, his “Great White Race” as he calls them was largely confined to the caves of Europe where extremely icy weather prevented them from leaving.
And yet, even as European colonialism and imperialism flourished, there were some European specialists who did in fact recognize Kemet for the indigenous African creation that it was. They were entirely shunned by the larger academic community, however, or at the very least conveniently ignored. Foremost among them was Gerald Massey, the author of Ancient Egypt: the light of the world. Others included A. H. L. Herren and Sir E. A. Wallis Budge, the latter writing in his late 19th century book about Egypt: “The pre-historic native of Egypt, both in the old and in the new Stone Ages, was African and there is every reason for saying that the earliest settlers came from the South.” Eugen Georg in his 1931 book, The Adventure of Mankind, reached the same conclusion as Massey and Budge, holding that “Blacks were the first to plow the mud of the Nile; they were the dark-skinned, curly-haired Kushites.” In the latter half of the 20th century a whole field of Africans and people of African descent who specialized in every major field of science made the cause of restoring Africa’s proper place in world history their own, producing irrefutable evidence that Africa was both the cradle of humanity and civilization itself. Some of the most prominent names of this African-centered, or Afrocentric, approach were the late Senegalese scholar Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop, Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, Dr. John G. Jackson, Dr. George G.M. James and Dr. Molefi Kete Asante just to name a few. Together they struck at the heart of white supremacy in higher education like nothing ever had before or since. The reaction of the traditional Eurocentric academia was hysterical, and many right-wing traditionalists still openly mock and deride Afrocentrist curriculum because of what it represents. They feel threatened by African and African Diaspora people studying and interpreting their own history on their own terms, instead of terms drawn up and favored by the white establishment.
Why then has the larger European and Euro-American academic community sought to thwart, undermine, erase, downplay and bury the earliest evidence that the origins of classical civilization are firmly rooted in Africa? The British journalist Flora Shaw, writing 100 years ago under the name of ‘Lady Lugard’, seems as if she might have known the answer:
“If this should prove the case and the civilized world be forced to recognize in a black people the fount of its original enlightenment, it may happen that we shall have to revise entirely our view of the black races, and regard those who now exist as the decadent representatives of an almost forgotten era, rather than as the embryonic possibility of an era yet to come.” [quoted from Christianity Before Christ. Jackson, John G. (1985). Page 177]
To put it another way, to acknowledge this would be to acknowledge the extent of the crime that’s been committed against the African men and women of the world, and it would undermine the entire racist logic underpinning the brutal systems of capitalism and imperialism. Count comte de Volney of France recalled in 1787 the revelation that came to him as he beheld the only face of its size to have truly withstood the test of time. Gazing at the gigantic ‘Sphinx’ of Giza, he began to gain a sense of the magnitude of what was being done to the Africans. It was then that it dawned on him
“…that this race of blacks who nowadays are slaves and the object of our scorn is the very one to which we owe our arts, our sciences and even the use of spoken word; and finally recollect that it is in the midst of the peoples claiming to be the greatest friends of liberty and humanity that the most barbarous of enslavements has been sanctioned and the question raised whether black men have brains of the same quality as those of white men!”
That the roles of these historically Black and Brown characters are still being reserved for only the palest of faces speaks volumes about the continuing racism against African people. It sends a message that just about anyone is allowed to take credit for and bask in the glow of African civilizations except for African people themselves! But if there’s one thing Europeans and people of European descent should remember, it’s that just because some might perceive themselves as being the present-day masters of the globe, it doesn’t mean this was always the case, nor is it guaranteed they shall remain so in the future. Empires in history rise and fall; even the United States will prove no exception.
Additional Notes:
* When the situation is reversed, however, and a Black actor is cast in a role that’s been traditionally reserved for white actors, the backlash from angry white fans has been generally furious. For example, there’s that time when Donald Glover was seriously considered for the part of Peter Parker in the Amazing Spider Man movie, Quvenzhané Wallis was cast to star in the little orphan Annie remake, and most recently when it was announced that Michael B. Jordan would be playing Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four live-action movie. These are fictional stories by the way.
And oh yeah, the Council of Conservative Citizens (the modern spin-off of the White Citizens Council) actually organized a boycott of the movie Thor because the talented actor Idris Elba was cast in the role of ‘Norse’ God Hiemdall.
** As further testament to just how far James Breasted’s racist historiography reached, here’s a direct quote from Georgia’s segregationist Dixiecrat Senator Richard Russell, explaining his reason for his filibustering the Civil Rights Act of 1964:
“I’m not an anthropologist, but I’ve studied history. And there is no case in history of a mongrel race preserving a civilization, much less creating one.” [Quoted from Judgement Day: Lyndon Baines Johnson, Martin Luther King Jr., and the laws that changed America. Kotz, Nick. (2005). Page 134.]

ahahaha Well, I see you already discussed this for good, but nothing concerning hairstyles. Guess just gonna cut them! (PS: Am egyptian too, still I was born and I grew in Italy, I am “white”, still I have very very dry curly light colored afros, almost the same as “Tinariwen” rockandroll tuaregs).Aside of that I think that ignorance has many things in common aside from borders. Hi Caleb gee in see it has been a while since you wrote this article but i came across the picture you put up of the young man of the “beka” tribe but hey Caleb gee, i came through your article browsing for pictures and it’s a great article but the man described as “beka” tribe is actually from the kereyu tribe of Oromo, Ethiopia. Am Ethiopian myself so i guarantee. They may have physical similarities with the beja tribe but that’s definitely a kereyu man. I know this article has been written a while back but wanted to inform you. Besides the minor error, interesting article 👍

I assume it’s because Sub Saharan Africans are not Egyptians. I love how you refuse to include any of the artifacts that aren’t from Nubian rule. I’d like to assume you’ve been to Egypt, but I’m convinced you’re just an Afrocentric who thinks science and anthropology care about race. The ancient Egyptians weren’t white Europeans, but they most certainly weren’t black Africans either. Historically speaking the Mediterranean has never been black. How do you explain thousands of mummies with red and blonde hair with caucasoid features? Personally I don’t care to try and prove what skin shade the Egyptians were, they can be purple for all I care. For anyone who has studied Egypt, been to Egypt, you know there aren’t floods of depictions of black Africans anywhere. It’s insulting to suggest the ancient Egyptians said screw civilization, we are going to walk 6000 miles through a desert to digress back to mud huts and spears. If they didn’t then why are petty black Americans concerned who plays the role? Considering their features are most certainly caucasoid, and there aren’t an influx of Copic actors that I can think of…..

Summary the Egyptians weren’t white, they weren’t black, they were Egyptians. Black and white Americans share no culture with Egypt. If you read Afrocentrism you’re probably a racist a-hole.

I see images from 1st dynasty and 3rd dynasty in comments section, the 17th and 18th in the blog post. Do you think all of those were “Nubian”?
Also you’re crazy if you think the hair color of mummies like Rameses II, who was in his 80s when he died, are evidence of blonde and red hair. What 80-something year old do you know of that still has their original hair color?

I was unfortunate enough to have seen the trailer for this god-awful movie “gods of Egypt” when I went to see the movie Concussion the other night, and I was embarrassed for the actors in this cheesy film. They used colours to represent many things, for example, you posted a picture earlier of Osiris who is the God of Khert-neter (or the underworld).
In the myths, Osiris died and is hence represented by being painted black and also often green as in their observation, it was the color that corpses turned as they rotted. I didn’t say that they were the exact color as painted on reliefs.

As for the pictures you posted, it’s not even an accurate drawing. There are several “Table of Nations” drawings in Egyptian tombs, and each one of them show a much greater distinction between native Egyptians and Semites than between Egyptians and the other Africans to their south (from whence they originally came).

They were royalty, musicians, governors, upper nobility etc. and they were most certainly not doing manual labor outside all day any more than the average woman.

Greek historian Diodorus Siculus. From his own statements we learn that he traveled in Egypt around 60 BC. His travels in Egypt probably took him as far south as the first Cataract.

Now these are the only nations who use circumcision, and it is plain that they all imitate herein the Egyptians. With respect to the Ethiopians, indeed, I cannot decide whether they learned the practice of the Egyptians, or the Egyptians of them (it is undoubtedly of very ancient date in Ethiopia). But that the others derived their knowledge of it from Egypt is clear to me, from the fact that the Phoenicians, when they come to have commerce with the Greeks, cease to follow the Egyptians in this custom, and allow their children to remain uncircumcised.” (Herodotus, The Histories, Book 2:104)
The opinion of the ancient writers on the Egyptians is more or less summed up by French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero The Dawn of Civilization (1894), when he says, “By the almost unanimous testimony of ancient historians, they [the Egyptians] belong to an African race which first settled in Ethiopia on the Middle Nile: following the course of the river they gradually reached the sea.” The German scholar, Eugen Georg, in his book The Adventure of Mankind (1931) p. 121, tells us about the “. . . world-wide dominance of Ethiopian representatives of the black race. They were supreme in Africa and Asia. In upper Egypt and India they erected mighty religious centers and mastered a perfect technique in the molding of bronze — and they even infiltrated through Southern Europe for a thousand years.”
In his book Egypt, British scholar Sir E.A. Wallis Budge says: “The prehistoric native of Egypt, both in the old and in the new Stone Ages, was African and there is every reason for saying that the earliest settlers came from the South.” He further states: “There are many things in the manners and customs and religions of the historic Egyptians that suggests that the original home of their prehistoric ancestors was in a country in the neighborhood of Uganda and Punt.” (Some historians believe that the biblical land of Punt was in the area known on modern maps as Somalia.)
Stephanus of Byzantium, who is said to represent the opinions of the most ancient Greeks, says:

Arnold Hermann Heeren (1760-1842), Professor of History and Politics in the University of Gottengen and one of the ablest of the early exponents of the economic interpretation of history, published, in the fourth and revised edition of his great work Ideen Uber Die Politik, Den Verkehr Und Den Handel Der Vornehmsten Volker Der Alten Weld, a lengthy essay on the history, culture, and commerce of the ancient Ethiopians, which had profound influence on contemporary writers in the conclusion that it was among these ancient Black people of Africa and Asia that international trade was first developed.
He thinks that as a by-product of these international contacts there was an exchange of ideas and cultural practices that laid the foundations of the earliest civilizations of the ancient world. Heeren in his researches says: “From the remotest times to the present, the Ethiopians have been one of the most celebrated, and yet the most mysterious of nations. In the earliest traditions of nearly all the civilized nations of antiquity, the name of this distant people is found. The annals of the Egyptian priests are full of them, and the nations of inner Asia, on the Euphrates and Tigris, have interwoven the fictions of the Ethiopians with their traditions of the wars and conquests of their heroes; and, at a period equally remote, they glimmer in Greek mythology. When the Greeks scarcely knew Italy and Sicily by name, the Ethiopians were celebrated in the verses of their poets, and when the faint gleam of tradition and fable gives way to the clear light of history, the lustre of the Ethiopians is not diminished.”
The French writer Constantin-François Volney (1757-1820), in his important work, The Ruins of Empires, extends this point of view by saying that the Egyptians were the first people to “attain the physical and moral sciences necessary to civilized life.” In referring to the basis of this achievement he states further that, “It was, then, on the borders of the Upper Nile, among a Black race of men, that was organized the complicated system of worship of the stars, considered in relation to the productions of the earth and the labors of agriculture; and this first worship, characterized by their adoration under their own forms and national attributes, was a simple proceeding of the human mind.”

Flora Shaw’s (alias Lady Flora Lugard) book is an extraordinary look at the history of Africa, which she gathered from countless sources, and one would imagine a great deal of it came from the British Library and from the archives of The Times of London, for whom she had for many years been the Foreign Political Correspondent. She had always been known to be an intensive researcher into her subject matter, and one wonders at the months and probably years she put into this undertaking, which became the reference work for so many future books on Africa. This book was first published 100 years ago showing the detail and descriptive power, and the greatness that Africa once was. Lady Lugard argues that:
“When the history of Negroland comes to be written in detail, it may be found that the kingdoms lying towards the eastern end of Sudan (classical home of Ancient Ethiopians) were the home of races who inspired, rather than of races who received, the tradition of civilization associated for us with the name of ancient Egypt. For they cover on either side of the Upper Nile between the latitudes of ten degrees and seventeen degrees, territories in which are found monuments more ancient than the oldest Egyptian monuments. If this should prove to be the case and civilized world be forced to recognize in a black people the fount of its original enlightenment, it may happen that we shall have to revise entirely our view of the black races, and regard those who now exist as the decadent representatives of an almost forgotten era, rather than as the embryonic possibility of an era yet to come.”

The story told on the stela is set in the 18th year of the reign of king Djoser. The text describes how the king is upset and worried, as the land of Egypt has been in the grip of a drought and famine for seven years, during which time the Nile has not flooded the farm lands. The text also describes how the Egyptian people are suffering as a result of the drought and that they are desperate and breaking the laws of the land. Djoser asks the priest staff under the supervision of high lector priest Imhotep for help. The king wants to know where Hapy (a river deity directly identified with the Nile) is born and which god resides at this place.
Imhotep decides to investigate the archives of the temple Hut-Ibety (“House of the nets”), located at Hermopolis and dedicated to the god Thoth. He informs the king that the flooding of the Nile is controlled by the god Khnum at Elephantine from a sacred spring located on the island, where the god resides. Imhotep travels immediately to the location which is called Jebu. In the temple of Khnum, called “Joy of Life”, Imhotep purifies himself, prays to Khnum for help and offers “all good things” to him. Suddenly he falls asleep and in his dream Imhotep is greeted by the kindly looking Khnum. The god introduces himself to Imhotep by describing who and what he is and then describes his own divine powers. At the end of the dream Khnum promises to make the Nile flow again. Imhotep wakes up and writes down everything that took place in his dream. He then returns to Djoser to tell the king what has happened.
The king is pleased with the news and issues a decree in which he orders priests, scribes and workers to restore Khnum´s temple and to once more make regular offerings to the god. That the end of slavery, a gross destruction of the rights of man (and an institution supported by the bible references to slavery) was followed by the invention of coolie labour and the destruction of the Kanaks, made by the same people who had felt good about abolishing slavery. Hey man. Thanks very much for taking time to read my writing and writing such a well thought-out comment. You have quite an amazing blog yourself. And I too have such admiration for Paul Robeson. He is one of my all-time heroes and it’s a shame so many people these days have never even heard of him. Washington D.C. designated him enemy #1 and Hollywood was only too quick and eager to comply.
Some points I think should be defined in this discussion.
1. We know nothing about the races of peoples in ancient times. In paintings from Egypt some figures are depicted with black skin: that’s as far as it goes. We can only derive the language groups of ancient peoples and don’t know where they came from.
2. ‘Race’ is a 19th century pseudo science invented to explain differences in skin colour, and the term is meaningless, as are the terms ‘caucasoid’, ‘negroid’ etc. The terms are based on the experience of colonialism, and are a justification of that experience. There are distinctions between types of humans, but they’re not based on race.
3. People are not happy with not knowing, and invent races, skin colour etc. I sympathise, but it’s not history. Its prejudice (sorry, a strong opinion).
4. ;Africa’ is a continent. People often speak of it as a nation, but it now includes 54 nations speaking 2,000 languages, with over 1 billion people. ‘African’ as a descriptive term is as meaningless as ‘Asian’. What about saying that all Americans are basically Europeans?
5. Squabbles over skin colour, races, and Africans, may be fun, but they can never settle anything, because the terms can not be defined.
6. Ancient paintings from Egypt were not realistic. They should not be treated like photos. They were painted according to set conventions. Men had darker skin than women for instance. The paintings have been subjected to unknown chemical changes over the centuries, and some of these might have affected colours. Pyramids and sculptures were painted in bright colours, but they are long gone, and would not have been realistic either.
7. We can’t assume that anthropoid apes from Africa had dark skin. They had body hair which hid the skin completely, so if we ever saw one we certainly wouldn’t think he or she was black.
So sorry to point this out. I hope others can keep up the discussion without recourse to silly terms like ‘African’, ‘race’, and (another one) ‘Ottoman’. As has been pointed out, peoples mixed throughout their history. Not only Iranians, but Greeks from Macedonia and Italians from Sicily sometimes have green eyes and blonde hair. Please forget race. It means hatred, it means oppression, it means cruelty, and nothing more.

The term “African” is not meaningless and cant be compared to calling all europeans american. Africans did not go about invading people, the diversity prevalent in nothern Africa is a result of Invasions. The peoples of Africa have root languages and were separated more than anything due to colonization and arbitrary borderlines. The empire of Songhai for instance occupied most of west africa. Kingdoms in ghana , the nok and Benin empire were dealing directly with Nile valley civilizations…Egypt has to be RE-contextualized to see it for what it was, the invaders currently occupying egypt are not of Africa, we know and they know, similar to those in south Africa. I’ve been following this thread and I have to say that most Egyptians look like a race with African AND Arab admixture. I am a mixed American with African heritage and throughout my time living in the mid-East, I am constantly asked if I am from Egypt! Also, whenever I watch Egyptians on TV or meet them in person, their phenotype reminds me so much of my own family. Sorry to say this but there are no Egyptians that are 100% Arab just as there are no Americans who are 100%. I wish you would do a DNA test along with your parents and grandparents and you will probably find African blood running through your veins.

Verily We created man of potter’s clay of black mud altered. And the jinn did We create aforetime of essential fire.
And (remember) when thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am creating a mortal out of potter’s clay of black mud altered. So, when I have made him and have breathed into him of My spirit, do ye fall down, prostrating yourselves unto him.
So the angels fell prostrate, all of them together. Save Iblis. He refused to be among the prostrate. He said: O Iblis! What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate? He said: Why should I prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter’s clay of black mud altered? He said: Then go thou forth from hence, for verily thou art outcast. And lo! the curse shall be upon thee till the Day of Judgment. He said: My Lord! Reprieve me till the day when they are raised. He said: Then lo! Thou art of those reprieved; Till an appointed time. He said: My Lord, Because Thou has sent me astray, I verily shall adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them every one. Save such of them as are Thy perfectly devoted slaves. [El Hijr-verses 26-40]
Marmeduke Pickthal translation of the Quran
Allah says that verily He created Adam from clay made of black mud and that before the creation of Adam, He created the jinn from fire of a scorching wind. Allah told the angels that He was going to create man from clay made of black mud. He told the angels that after He fashioned Adam and breathed into him from His spirit that they had to bow down to Adam. All of the angels bowed down to Adam. However, Iblis refused to bow. Allah asked Iblis why he refused to bow. Iblis said that he would not bow down to a man that He (Allah) created from clay made of black mud. Allah then expelled Iblis from Paradise and cursed him. Iblis asked Allah to grant him respite until the Day of Resurrection and Allah granted him respite. Iblis then said that he would lead Adam’s descendants astray; all of them except Allah’s sincere servants.
It is a known fact that the Arabic word for black mud is hama. Also, the scholars say the following about the word hama in their tafsirs (explanation) of the Quran:
· Explaining hama in the verses above, El Quortobi says in his tafsir of the Quran:
“Hama is black mud.” والحمأ: الطين الأسود
· Explaining hama in the verses above, Jalal Eddine Mohamed Ahmed El-Mahalli and Jalal Eddine Abdel Rahman El-Sayouti say in their tafsir of the Quran called Tafsir El-Jalaalain:
“Hama is black mud.” (من حمأ) طين أسود
· Explaining hama in the verses above, El Tabari says in his tafsir of the Quran:
“As for His words ‘from hama masnoun’, hama is the plural of ham_a which is mud that has been altered to the color black.”
وأما قوله “من حمإ مسنون” فإن الحمأ : جمع حمأة ، وهو الطين المتغير إلى السواد
· Explaining hama in the verses above, Mohamed ibn Ali El-Shawkaani says in his tafsir of the Quran called Fath El Qadir:
“Hama is black mud; either black mud that has been altered or black mud that hasn’t been altered.
والحمأ: الطين الأسود المتغير. أو الطين الأسود من غير تقييد بالمتغير
· Explaining hama in the verses above, El-Baidawi says in his tafsir:
“From hama” means from mud which was altered and is black.
” من حمإ” طين تغير واسود من طول محاورة الماء
· Explaining hama in the verse above, El-Baghawi says in his tafsir:
“From hama” and hama is black mud.
من حمإ”، والحمأ: الطين الأسود”
El-Baghawi also said:
“There are some hadith that say that Allah fermented the mud that
Adam was created from and let it sit until it became altered and
black and then He created Adam peace be upon him from it (the black, altered mud).”
وفي بعض الآثار: إن الله عز وجل خمر طينة آدم وتركه حتى صار متغيرا أسود، ثم خلق منه آدم عليه السلام
· Ibn al-Qayyim said:
“When the perfection, complete power, all-encompassing knowledge, ever-executed will and utmost wisdom of the Lord decreed that His creation should be of materials of different kinds, and that they should vary in their forms and attributes and natures, His wisdom decreed that He should take a handful of dust from the earth, then mix it with water. So it became like black stinking mud. Then the wind was sent upon it and it dried out, until it became clay like pottery. Then it was given shape and limbs and faculties, and each part of it was given a shape suited to its purpose.” (Tabaayun fi Aqsaam al-Quran, p. 204)
· Expaining hama, which is also found in verse 86 of surat El-Kahf, Ibn Kathir says in his tafsir:
Hamia is a lot of ham_a and ham_a means black mud.
” حمئة ” أي كثيرة الحمأة وهي الطينة السوداء
How many people truly understand these verses of the Holy Quran? How many people, both Islamic scholars and laypeople, reflect on these verses and try to understand and explain what Allah is saying in them? How many people give these verses the importance that they deserve? I always ask myself why these verses aren’t given the importance that they deserve when it is these very verses that show the origin of the battle between evil and good. Allah revealed the Quran to be studied and understood. Allah says,
أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَى قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا
Will they then not meditate on the Quran, or are there locks on the hearts? (Mohamed-verse 24)
Allah also says,
كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُوْلُوا الْأَلْبَابِ
(This is) a Scripture that We have revealed unto thee, full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations, and that men of understanding may reflect. (Sad-verse 29)
Why are people ignoring what Allah is saying in these verses about the creation of our father Adam? When Allah says that He created our father Adam from black mud, He says this for mankind to know. There are no words in the Quran that are unimportant or not worth explaining. The Quran is the speech of Allah and the best speech is the speech of Allah.
Those who claim that there are more important things that should be discussed before talking about the color of Adam and the description of the prophets must show where Allah says that some of His words are more important than others. They must also show where Allah says that what He said about the color of the mud that He created our father Adam from is not important. Those who make such a claim must also show where the prophet Mohamed (pbuh) said that the description that he gave of Musa’s (Moses’) and Isa’s (Jesus’) color is not important. If we say that it’s alright to disregard this part of the Quran and the Sunna, what’s to stop people from ignoring and calling insignificant other parts of the Quran and the Sunna? People cannot simply dismiss as unimportant any part of the Quran or the Sunna that they, for whatever reason, do not feel comfortable with. People cannot take it upon themselves to decide what in the religion is important and what isn’t important. Instead we must accept the religion in its entirety and say that it is all from our Lord. How can anyone consider information that might prevent people from imitating Satan and committing blasphemy unimportant? Certainly if a person understands that Allah created our father Adam black-skinned and he/she still looks down on that color and thinks that another color is better, he/she is imitating Satan and is committing blasphemy and all sorts of sins. It is important that people understand this fact.
If people gave more emphasis to these verses and understood what Allah is saying, there would probably be no racial prejudice and discrimination in the world today. There would probably be fewer conflicts in the world today, too. Allah says that He created Adam, the father of all mankind, from black mud. Is it possible for anyone who believes in Allah and understands the sublimity of Allah to dare look down on a physical attribute that Allah put in the father of mankind, whom He created with His own two hands and honored above all of His creation? He (Allah) honored our father Adam so much that He commanded the angels to bow down to Adam. Can a person who truly believes in Allah find fault in the appearance of he whom Allah created with His own two hands? Doing so is blasphemy and a great insult to Allah.

Well written, beautifully structured post. I completely agree with you on this matter. It is wrong to alter the look of historic (and iconic) African figures for the sake of entertainment purposes. If a darker skinned actor/actress cannot even play the role of a historically dark skinned figure, what does this imply? A white (or non-black) person does a better job than this? There is so much dialogue/discourse talking about the importance of developing Africa, when actually, Africa was cast under the imperialist/colonialist gaze and ‘developed’ a little too much. The history of Mali and of Egypt shows how little development AFrica actually needed. Instead, the continent was exposed to epistemicide. And yet our modern day philosophers still explore concepts (eg dream interpretation), which originated in Africa. Makes you think.
That’s a great point you make. It’s crazy to think how growing up we’re taught in the school curriculum how Africa (and likewise America) were places without any history whatsoever before Europeans came and brought it to them, when in actuality Europe was in the Dark Ages while the Kingdom of Mali was the light of the world. Britain for vast majority of world history a baren wasteland in comparison.
I know, and we forget the genocides which came out of Europe in the past century, and focus on dictatorships in Africa. It’s the stories which get told, the ones which get overlooked, and the histories dis-remembered which make all the difference.

Indeed it is deceptive. And what’s more is I’ve seen documentaries on the Discovery and History Channels in which not even a modern day Egyptian was used to reenact the roles, but white guys who looked like they come straight from rural Alabama or something.

I mean, just look at the military coup our tax money funded that overthrew the democratically-elected Mohammed Morsi, who was thrown in prison and tortured along with those who professed support for him. Nearly 300 have been sentenced to death! And why does the U.S. get away with saying it supports “democracy” everywhere in the world again? This is the antithesis of that.
