Miami-based Artist Huong Unveils Her Masterpiece “We Are All Trayvon Martin” Mural at Florida’s State Capitol

An artist in Miami who simply goes by the name Huong painted a mural in honor of Trayvon Martin titled “We Are All Trayvon Martin.” The mural, which was unveiled at the Florida State Capitol on August 9th, shows a man with a striking similarity to George Zimmerman shooting a hoodie-wearing figure in front of an image of Martin Luther King Jr. Instead of a face on the hooded figure, however, Huong inserted a mirror there so that observers could view themselves in the painting. According to Huong, a peace activist and Vietnam War refugee, “We decided not to stay quiet and make sure that we would be the voice Trayvon Martin was not allowed to keep. That is why we created this work, to ensure that everyone knows of the horrors that are still evident in our society and to educate the public on the monstrosity of racism.”

Huong also unveiled another large mural with which contained paintings of several world-renowned civil rights crusaders from across the globe, including Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, W.E.B. DuBois, Carlor Manuel de Cespedes, Mahatma Gandhi, Walter White, Oskar Schindler, Ruby Bridges, Cesar Chavez, Huey P. Newton, and Robert Purvis.

The message of the mural, created by Miami artist Huong, is “We are all Trayvon Martin.”

The mural shows a man who looks similar to George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch leader who shot and killed Martin in February 2012 and was later acquitted in the teen’s death, shooting a person wearing a hoodie.  There’s a mirror in the mural where Martin’s face would be so visitors can see themselves as the teen.

The mural also contains blank spaces where the public can share their thoughts, and  it also shows a picture of Martin Luther King Jr. with blood flowing down his head.

Huong also joined the Dream Defenders, a group holding a sit-in protest outside Gov. Rick Scott’s office for the past four weeks.  The group plans on taking the artwork on a nationwide tour, although the exact locations are  not yet known.
